On April 19, 1934, Eleanor Roosevelt, first lady of the USA, presided over a 6 AM ceremony at the Tidal Basin to celebrate the opening  of the first three day festival in Washington, DC.

This painting looks at that moment and salutes Sakiko Saito, daughter fo the Japanese Ambassador. She was crowned as the Cherry Blossom Festival Queen in 1937.
